Jang Yeong-sil was a fifteenth century Koreanscientist and astronomer during the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910).
Although Jang was born into the servant or slave class, Cheonmin, King Sejong's new policy of breaking class barriers allowed Jang to be recruited into the national civil service and to work at the royal palace.

Jang's inventions, such as the rain gauge and the water gauge, highlighted the technological advancements of the Joseon Dynasty.
